Prepare Now for Cooler Weather

With summer quickly fading into memory, it’s time to get your home ready for fall’s cooler temperatures and unpredictable weather. You can start by making a list of the little things that will make a big difference for your home when the temperature begins to dip. You may be able to check through your list on your own, though a few items may require the help of a professional.

Here are some key tasks for preparing your home for winter weather:

  • Clear out the gutters – Leaves and debris can accumulate in your gutters throughout summer. Remove them from the drainpipes in order to prevent clogging when the rain and snow come.
  • Seal gaps and cracks around doors and windows – Make your home airtight to keep out moisture or drafts.
  • Repair damaged sidewalks, driveways, and steps – Damaged paths and walkways could cause accidents, especially when they are wet. Repair them while the weather is still pleasant.
  • Drain outdoor faucets and irrigation systems – In regions where it gets especially cold, water in the pipes could burst when the temperatures fall to freezing levels. Drain them now to save you money on costly repairs.
  • Inspect your heating system – Get a professional to inspect and repair your home’s heating system.
  • Install storm windows – If your home has removable screens, it is time to take them out and replace them with storm windows that will protect the home from heavy rains and strong winds.
  • Inspect and clean the water heater – Drain the water heater and clear the debris that might have settled in the tank.

As you get your home ready for cold weather ahead, consider investing in a generator.  When the power goes down, which can be quite common in seasons of extreme weather, the generator will enable you to sustain life as usual.   Look for a diesel power generator for sale online or in stores near you.
