New Year’s Resolution: Be Prepared

It’s the New Year, and that means it’s time to set your New Year’s resolutions. The most popular resolutions include getting in better shape, spending more time on relationships, saving money, and getting organized. If you are looking to be more organized in the coming year, consider focusing on emergency preparedness.  Do you have a plan in place in case a catastrophe strikes?  Do you have the supplies necessary to stay safe and comfortable in the wake of a disaster?

Being prepared for an emergency could be one of the best resolutions you ever make. Many lives have been lost in times of disaster because people were not adequately prepared.  Of course, nothing you do can guarantee safety, but emergency preparedness can often mitigate the effects of catastrophes. Being prepared involves anticipating the future. If you know about approaching hurricanes, you can plan to evacuate.  If you understand the timing of the storm, you may be able to safeguard some of your property before it hits.

You need to be familiar with evacuation routes in case you have to leave in a hurry. In the event of a house fire, for example, each family member should know how to leave the house as quickly as possible. If you are leaving the area due to a storm, you should know the safest car routes.

After evacuating to a safe place, have a plan to get in touch with other family members. You may be in different places when the disaster strikes, so it’s important to establish a location to meet up.

If the emergency involves power outages, make sure to have an emergency source of power. Having a portable generator to sustain power will allow you to stay safe and comfortable.

Happy New Year from all of us at Americas Generators.  We look forward to helping you get prepared in the coming year.
