Video: How to Switch the Voltage on a Rental Generator

When operating a rental generator, adjusting the voltage to suit different types of equipment may be necessary. This detailed guide ensures safe and efficient handling for anyone new to using generators or in need of a refresher.

Step-by-Step Guide to Switching Voltage on a Rental Generator

1. Read the Manual
Begin by familiarizing yourself with the generator’s manual. It contains crucial information about safe operation and adjustment settings specific to your model.

2. Turn Off the Generator
Ensure the generator is completely off before making any adjustments. This precaution prevents electric shock and protects both the generator and connected equipment.

3. Locate the Voltage Selector Switch
Find the voltage selector switch, typically mounted on the control panel of the generator, but can also be found inside the unit (see video). It is marked with various voltage settings.

4. Adjust the Voltage Selector
Set the switch to the desired voltage that matches your equipment’s requirements. Ensure it’s firmly set to maintain proper contact.

5. Check Configuration Requirements
Some models may need additional adjustments, such as reconfiguring breaker settings or internal connections. These tasks should be handled by qualified personnel.

6. Restart the Generator
With the selector switch properly adjusted, restart your generator. Power up the controller and start the engine as per the usual process. If your model features a potentiometer, use it to fine-tune the voltage to the selected setting.

7. Test the Output
Use a multimeter or voltage tester to ensure the output matches the generator’s settings. It’s crucial that the output is stable and correct before connecting any sensitive equipment.

8. Connect Your Equipment
Once you’ve verified the voltage, connect your equipment, ensuring that it does not exceed the generator’s capacity.

Safety Tips While Operating Generators

• Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and eye protection.
• Never attempt to change voltage settings while the generator is running.
• If unsure about the process or the manual’s instructions are unclear, consult a professional or consider hiring a qualified technician.
