10 Items for Your Weekly Generator Inspection Checklist

A backup generator is a lifeline during power outages. It ensures important operations continue with no interruption. Regular inspection and testing are key to relying on your backup generator when needed.

This guide emphasizes the importance of following a generator inspection checklist on a regular schedule. Whether your generator is vital to your daily operations or a backup for emergencies, proactive maintenance makes all the difference.

Why Regular Generator Inspection Matters

Inspections may occur daily, bi-weekly, or weekly. Your maintenance schedule depends on the importance of your generator’s job. Here’s why this routine matters:

• Early Problem Detection: Regular inspections increase the odds of identifying and addressing issues before they become problems. This approach is a proactive approach. It minimizes the risk of generator failure and improves its functioning long term.
• Ensuring Readiness: Your generator should always be ready to kick into action. Routine inspections verify that it’s clean, dry, and functioning. They prevent equipment failures from the wear and tear of weather and use.
• Cost Effective: Conducting these different types of inspections ensures your backup power and standby generator parts stand the test of time. Protecting equipment improves longevity and saves you money.

Key Inspection Points on a Generator

Maintenance activities can be done by a maintenance team, property manager, yourself, or a maintenance technician. The goal is to ensure all pieces of equipment needed to operate your power source are in working condition. Here are the essential steps to include in your generator inspection checklist:

1. Visual Inspection: Examine the generator and its enclosure for cleanliness and dryness. Look for any obvious issues that might require attention.
2. Safety First: Test the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they’re operational. Safeguard the environment around the generator.
3. Fluid Levels and Pressure: Check oil, coolant, and fuel levels. Confirm that fuel is reaching your generator. Confirm that the oil and coolant levels are correct.
4. Battery Check: Verify that the battery is charged and corrosion-free. This prepares it for a seamless start-up. It can be nice to have a battery backup in case there is a battery failure.
5. Hose and Connection Inspection: Inspect hoses, fittings, and connections for leaks or ill-fitting contact points. Replace and improve connections wherever needed.
6. Electrical Components: Examine electrical wiring and components for signs of wear, corrosion, or loose connections.
7. Transfer Switch: Inspect the automatic transfer switch. Use it to test the generator’s functionality. Depending on your setup, this may be done separately from your regular inspection schedule.
8. Alert Response: Address any unusual noises, vibrations, or alerts while the generator runs, as they could signal underlying problems.
9. Auto Mode Activation: Ensure the generator is set to “Auto” mode rather than “Off” after testing. This allows it to start automatically during a power outage.
10. External Equipment: Don’t overlook other external equipment, including fire extinguishers, first aid kits, manuals, and maintenance logs. Ensure they are accessible and in good condition. You never know when these tools might come in handy.
